A Closer Look: Gen 1 vs. Gen 2 Starlink Satellite Dishes

Not every user may see the need to upgrade from Gen 1 to 2, as it largely depends on their specific needs and circumstances. For example, if a user lives in a moderate climate and does not require extreme temperature resistance, there may be no significant advantage in upgrading to Gen 2.

Things are pretty different for those living in more extreme climates or locations with challenging mounting conditions that may benefit greatly from upgrading to Gen 2. The smaller size and improved mounting system make it easier to install and provide better stability in adverse conditions. For homes where installing dishes on their roofs is not an option, Gen 2 can also be installed via a ground pole mount that will require digging in the ground.

Notably, SpaceX was also able to cut their costs in half with the Gen 2 design, making it more affordable for users.

Below, we've detailed just how the two versions differ and what advantages you might gain from upgrading to Gen 2. This way, you can decide for yourself whether it's worth making the switch.

  1. Operating Temperature Range:
    • Gen 1: 0°C – 30°C
    • Gen 2: -30°C – 50°C
    • Difference: Gen 2 can operate in a wider range of temperatures, making it suitable for more extreme climates.

  1. Design and Dimensions:
    • Gen 1: Circular shape, 58.9 cm in diameter, 3.56 cm mast width, 7.26 kilograms
    • Gen 2: Rectangular shape, 48.26 cm x 30.48cm, 3.30 cm mast width, 4.17 kilograms
    • Difference: Gen 2 is smaller, lighter, and rectangular in shape, providing more flexibility in installation and placement.

  1. Cabling:
    • Gen 1: Has attached cables that may break. The cables are also irreplaceable, requiring the purchase of a new dish if they break.
    • Gen 2: Has a removable cable design, allowing for easy replacement if the cable breaks. This eliminates the need to replace the entire dish.
    • Difference: Gen 2's removable cable design offers a more convenient and cost-effective solution in case of cable damage.

  1. Power Consumption:
    • Gen 1: 65W – 100W
    • Gen 2: 50W – 75W
    • Difference: Gen 2 is slightly more energy-efficient, requiring lower power consumption.

  1. Mounting System:
    • Gen 1: Tripod setup, circular design, potentially challenging to mount.
    • Gen 2: Four legs for strong mounting, more compact size and shape, easier to mount.
    • Difference: Gen 2's improved mounting system with four legs and a compact design makes it easier to install and provides better stability.

  1. Network Connectivity:
    • Gen 1: The ethernet jack is included for wired network connection.
    • Gen 2: The ethernet jack has been removed
    • Difference: You'll need to buy an ethernet adapter from Starlink for a wired connection if you're using the Gen 2 dishy.

  1. Temperature Resistance and Water-Resistance:
    • Both Gen 1 and Gen 2 have the same water-resistant rating of IP54.
    • Difference: Gen 2's wider temperature range indicates improved durability and functionality in extreme weather conditions.
